The transient body: The inherent obsolescence of fashion's constant change
7 February 2014
Considering that a critical awareness of production processes is inherent in the current design problem in the context of growing concerns with the environment, how do we reconcile the ephemeral nature of fashion with sustainability and social equity? Since society rarely produces objects that acknowledge their own disappearance, it might become necessary to explore fashion's transience through fashion's own materiality. In an experimental approach, the idea of materiality discussed in this masterclass is one reflecting upon the responsibility and freedom not only of design processes themselves, but also from the issues of discarding objects of use, resulting in a possible re-reading of the concept of planned obsolescence.
